2. Don't jump into freelance writing headfirst without knowing what you're doing. It's easy enough to find someone who wants content created for their website or blog online (that's where Google comes in!), but it takes special training and expertise as well as a lot of research and dedication to be a good writer, and especially a successful freelance writer.
3. Write for what interests you, not just for money or exposure. If you're passionate about the topic, it'll show through in your work, which will attract readers over time – but that's not why we're here!
The more income potential you have with the same amount of work put into your business from day one, the better off you'll be long-term.
4. Get busy writing so you can start getting paid! Whether it's blogging or copywriting, there are plenty of opportunities out there if you know where to look.
5. Research your competition thoroughly! It's important not to copy what they're doing, but instead, use their accomplishments as inspiration for your own success.
Study what they have done right to learn how to replicate it yourself and create an even better business than they built!

There are too many people out there who want to believe that some magical client will come along and pay them a million dollars for writing an article or blog post, but most of those people are going to be sorely disappointed when it never happens.
Don't let that be you; operate your own freelance business like a business instead and you'll see far more success!
7. Set some goals (write them down!) and go after them one by one.
Do you want to make $200 per week? $500? $1,000? That's fine – write down all the figures that seem reasonable to reach within the next twelve months so that you can measure your success as time goes on! If you set high goals for yourself, there's no limit to how much money you might earn as a freelance writer in the long term.
8. Be willing to work for free if you have to early on!
It's a harsh reality of this industry that you might not always be able to make money right out of the gate, so don't turn down projects or charge much in the beginning just because you want to be paid. In time, your skills and experience will grow, which will allow you to raise your rates and say no to more bad leads who can't afford you – but you'll never get there without getting any experience first!
9. Keep honing your craft by reading other great articles online or maybe taking a course at the local community college or university. You might not feel like a "professional" when it comes to writing yet (and the truth is, you probably still have a long way to go), but every article that you read or class assignment that you finish will make your work better than when you started.
10. Don't give up! It'll be difficult at times to build your business from scratch while working full-time as well, especially as deadlines get closer and other obligations start approaching as well!

This could mean anything from creating a website that markets yourself better online or learning how to use social media properly – but regardless of what path you end up taking, having a plan in place goes a long way towards helping you succeed!
12. Don't be afraid to spend money if it means making more money in return! There are numerous ways that you can market your business and help make some noise about your successes – which is going to go a long way towards earning more clients down the road when they realize that there's another freelancer just like you out there, only this one costs a little bit more.
That doesn't mean that you should overspend on everything, though; just be wise and don't pass up opportunities that can lead to greater success in the long-term without doing some extra research first!
13. Remember that it's never too early or too late to start as a freelance writer – there's always something new to learn out there and industry standards change all the time, so keep your mind open and stay up-to-date with not only trends but also your craft itself!
It takes time to build a successful career as a freelance writer, but even if you only make $20 per week after your first year in business – well, you're $160 richer than you were before!
14. Never stop looking for potential clients and good opportunities to work together, no matter what happens in the future.

Keep track of all your clients, keep track of all your deadlines, keep track of what needs to get done and when it needs to be done by – nothing's worse than scrambling around for work hours before a project has to go out or being late on submitting an assignment that you agreed upon with your client.
Being disorganized will only lead to anxiety and frustration (and nobody wants that), so avoid those problems altogether by staying on top of everything from day one!
Freelance writing is flexible, which means you can work from home.
