Garage Sale Ideas

In today's struggling economy many people have to find a way to stretch every dollar they make. One way is by starting their own garage sale and selling items they no longer want or need.

If you are thinking about having your own garage sale here are some ideas that will help you get started.

First, decide how much time you can devote to planning and running the sale. If it is just a weekend event you might want to consider having it on Saturday morning only.

In this case, make sure you advertise it as such. A lot of people work during the week and if they show up at your house first thing in the morning expecting a Saturday yard sale, they may be disappointed with your lack of effort!

Next, determine which day of the week is best for you. Many people think that Saturday morning would be best, and in many cases, it may be. But if your neighborhood has a lot of young families with kids, they may not all have the day off so consider this when picking a date.

It is also important to pick a location that will work well for you. If you live on a corner lot where two streets are coming together, by all means, use them as boundaries! Otherwise, limit yourself to one or two side yards only.

Also, determine what time you will begin setting up for the sale. Most yard sales get started early in the morning but don't plan on having everything set up until it is daylight outside (of course).

You could set up the night before but make sure it is not raining or windy. Remember to take into account the weather forecast when planning as you don't want all of your hard work ruined by a sudden thunderstorm.

What sells best at a garage sale?

Many people will tell you that garage sales are either the best or worst thing ever to happen to them. For me, I found a really good deal on DVDs. There are many things you can sell at your next garage sale and here are some of my favorites:

  • Clothes
  • Books
  • DVDs
  • CDs
  • Electronics (in good condition)
  • Furniture

Do you have a large collection of DVDs and CDs that just aren't being utilized like they used to be? Sell them at your next garage sale.

Many people will buy these items in bulk because it would cost more than half the price of buying online to ship each item individually. It is also beneficial because you don't want to have DVDs and CDs cluttering up your house, if you can sell them for cheap then why not?

Make sure the discs are all readable before selling though! You don't want to go through the trouble of getting rid of something that people won't even buy.

Another good idea is clothes or books. Most people get rid of these types of things over time, so when they have a garage sale they have a lot of clothes to sell.

For this reason, you should bring your clothes and set them up when they are having their garage sale. This way there is already a group of people who are going to be looking through everything just for you!

For books, it's the same thing as with DVDs. People will usually get rid of them once they read them so if you have an excess amount then sell them at the next garage sale.

It won't do anyone any good if they are cluttering up your house, right? You can also put certain books together by genre or author and market those on craigslist. Just because someone isn't selling them doesn't mean that someone out won't buy them!

Electronics are also a good idea. Obviously, you can't sell them in poor condition because then there is no point in even buying them. However, if they work and you have an abundance of it then why not sell it?

People will buy all types of electronics such as Xbox 360s, PlayStations (PS2 or PS3), Gameboys (DS or DS Lite), laptops, iPods, eReaders, video cameras, and phones. Just be careful when selling these items since many people purchase only to turn around and resell them online for profit!

Furniture is something else that people tend to get rid of once they either move into a new house or redecorate their old home. The best way to get rid of furniture is by selling it at a garage sale.

This way you can get rid of mass amounts quickly and for cheap. If you want to sell on craigslist or another place where they request contact information then make sure whoever responds first gets the item!

You don't want your items sitting around just in case someone wants them and doesn't end up buying anything...

Overall, these are some good ideas when it comes to putting together a garage sale; I hope this helps someone out there with their future endeavor!

Finally, decide on a price range for each item. You might want to write down these prices ahead of time and tuck them in your pocket so you can refer to them throughout the day if needed. Just be careful not to lose this paper!

As you can see some key factors go into planning a garage sale and it is important that you follow these suggestions if you plan on having one at all!

Having a successful garage sale is not only good for getting rid of unwanted items; it's also a great way to make a little extra money if you need it.
